Story

This song from Coming Of Age is sung by the character Meg, who's just found out that her parents are divorcing. It is a lullabye of sorrow, its simple melody and lyrics expressing the universal denial of refusing to believe in a bad situation.

Coming Of Age, subtitled "a musical about being thirteen-performed by the only people who could" with the book by Ann Goethe (http://www.nytimes.com/1993/05/23/books/in-short-fiction-270193.html) and music by Melanie Hammet, was published and distributed worldwide by the National Association Of Secondary School Principals. The original title, Puberty Blues, was considered too racy in 1983 so the authors were asked to re-consider, although the song "Puberty Blues" remains as the opening music.

This recording, sung by Lori Grigsby, http://lorigrigsby.com, was released on an LP and later digitized--the clicks and pops of the original track are preserved and add ambiance to Lori's beautiful vocal.

Lyrics

That's Not The Way It's Supposed To Be

Hammet

I always knew good dreams came true

and wishing was real for me

but things have changed-they've rearranged

that's not the way it's supposed to be

It seems unfair each time I care

someone starts hurting me

my feelings show because I know

that's not the way it's supposed to be

as I grow and become I lose and keep some of the pictures I made as a child

I'm stronger and weaker I'm blind I'm a seeker of worlds that seem tame and seem wild

I always knew good dreams came true

and wishing was real for me

but things have changed-they've rearranged

that's not the way it's supposed to be
