Story

(From the CD Edifice Complex and other urban plans)

This song was written, in part, after reading James Howard Kunstler's The Geography Of Nowhere (http://www.kunstler.com) and The Worst Hard Time by Timothy Egan (http://www.timothyegan.com). The images of the ecological disaster of the dust bowl paired with the development of suburbia offered up a gritty musicality, resulting in dystopian lyrics and three chord rage.

After the Deepwater Horizon spill I added a final verse:

It is the oil on the water

It is the bird on the sand

It is the stain across our future

It is the lay of the land.

Lyrics

Lay of the Land

it is the ground we walk upon

it is our best laid plan

it is the rain where it falls

it is the lay of the land

it is the place we take shelter

it is what we demand

it is the view unobstructed

it is the lay of the land

it is the automobile

it’s where the highway began

it is decay or renewal

it is the lay of the land

mapmaker mapmaker

make me a map

call it the place where we find happiness

it is the lifestyle unexamined

it is a disaster unplanned

it is the mall it is sprawl it is all of the all

it is the dust mote float take note

it is the dirt on our hands

it is the dream it is the scheme come apart at the seams

it is the oil in the water

it is the bird on the sand

it is the stain across our future
